Funeral
If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.
1 Corinthians 15:19-20

At life's end, there are many thoughts. Perhaps one has followed a loved
one on his or her last journey in life. Perhaps death came suddenly,
leaving the survivors with many unanswered questions. Perhaps there was
no time for a proper farewell. Perhaps death came naturally, ending a long
and rich life.
The Swedish Church in Toronto is available for funeral services, both in the church and in funeral homes.
Memorial Bells
Ringing a memorial bell to commemorate those who have passed is part of the main
Sunday service in Swedish churches. Following a short prayer, the deceased is
named and the bells are rung, as a way to remember and give thanks for a life lived.
As the bells are rung, a candle is also lit. The deceased need not have been a
member of the congregation, nor lived in Canada, and the funeral service need not
have taken place in the church. You may also arrange memorial bells for anyone
close or dear, who has passed away in Sweden, or any other country.
All Saints Sunday
According to Swedish tradition, All Saints Day is a day to visit the cemetery to
light a candle in memory of those who have left us. Traditionally the first of
November, All Saints Day is now celebrated on the first Sunday of November. A few
weeks prior to All Saints Sunday, the church will mail invitations to relatives of
those who have passed away during the year, inviting them to a special memorial
service. During the service, the names of all who have passed are read, and those
present will have the opportunity to light a candle in their memory. This All Saints
Sunday service is to remember all who have preceded us, and you are also invited to
light candles for loved ones who have departed in earlier years.
